Steel to Zero - how steel will go green

Our Podcasts

Steel products are ubiquitous – cars, washing machines, surgical needles, and many other products that play an important role in our lives would be just as inconceivable without steel materials as would wind turbines, which play a key role in driving the energy transition.

When it comes to the question of how steel products can be made green, there are many aspects to consider, ranging from technical feasibility to underlying political conditions. In our podcast, we take a closer look at these aspects and explore the background and challenges on the road to green steel.

Germany is aiming to become as greenhouse gas neutral as possible by 2045.

This also applies to the steel industry. There are plenty of good ideas out there on the road to this goal, but also plenty of challenges. The important thing is that decarbonization will only succeed as quickly as possible if all the relevant stakeholders, from companies in the value chain to policymakers, work together to achieve it. In our podcast Steel to Zero, we present the economic, technical, and political interrelationships associated with decarbonization and highlight possible courses of action, but also limitations. To this end, we let proven experts have their say.

We hope you enjoy listening and gain new insights from our podcast Steel to Zero - how steel will go green.

Episode 1 – The challenge: the steel industry’s complex value chain

Apple Podcasts Spotify

Content:

In order to significantly reduce carbon emissions from steel, we need to look at every level of the value chain. In this first episode of our podcast, you’ll learn how Waelzholz, as a technology leader in the cold rolling industry and an integral part of this value chain, is heading down the path to carbon neutrality and what role the system we’ve developed to precisely track and allocate the carbon emissions of each material version plays in this process.

Guests:

Dr. Heino Buddenberg (CEO of C.D. Wälzholz GmbH & Co. KG)

Dr. Matthias Gierse (Managing Director Sales and Purchasing of C.D. Wälzholz GmbH & Co. KG)

Host:

Episode 2 – Reducing the Footprint: From Low-Carbon Emissions Steel to Carbon Neutrality

Apple Podcasts Spotify

Content:

Producing around 11 tons of crude steel annually, thyssenkrupp Steel is the largest steelmaker in Germany and has a significant impact on the product carbon footprint due to its energy-intensive manufacturing processes. In this episode of the podcast, we examine, among other things, the processes that thyssenkrupp is already using today to reduce its carbon emissions, how crude steel production can become carbon neutral by 2045, and how Waelzholz is supporting this transformation process with a view to the entire value chain.

Guests:

Dr. Marie Jaroni (Head of Decarbonization & Sustainability de thyssenkrupp Steel)

Dr.-Ing. Heino Buddenberg (Director general de C.D. Wälzholz GmbH & Co. KG)

Episode 3 – We can’t do without it: the role of steel in a sustainable economy

Apple Podcasts Spotify

Content:

How much carbon is emitted during the production and day-to-day use of everyday products such as washing machines and ovens? Low power consumption is the key in this regard, but achieving the best possible carbon footprint of the materials used, such as steel, is equally important. In this podcast episode, we talk about the important role that modern steel materials from Waelzholz play for Miele, as a leading manufacturer of household appliances, in connection with reducing carbon emissions.

Guests:

Konstantin Eckert (Director Procurement Production Material at Miele & Cie. KG)

Dr. Matthias Gierse (Managing Director Sales and Purchasing at C.D. Wälzholz GmbH & Co. KG)

Episode 4 – Can we get to zero carbon with scrap? Why the use of EAF steel won’t reduce global carbon emissions

Apple Podcasts Spotify

Content:

When steel products have reached the end of their useful life, the material’s life is far from over – because steel can be recycled an unlimited number of times. In terms of the climate, the advantage is that the production of crude steel using scrap instead of iron ore significantly reduces carbon emissions. What initially sounds like a great solution for reducing emissions in the steel industry, however, quickly reaches its limits in terms of actual feasibility. In this episode of our sustainability podcast, you’ll learn about the possibilities that scrap offers and the limitations that restrict them.

Guests:

Sandrina Sieverdingbeck (general manager of DEUMU Deutsche Erz- und Metall-Union GmbH)

Dr. Matthias Gierse (Waelzholz consultant and former Director Sales and Purchasing of the Waelzholz Group)

Host:

Ute Neuhaus

Episode 5 – Do the underlying political conditions support the path towards a green steel industry in Germany and Europe?

Apple Podcasts Spotify

Content:

The competitiveness of the German and European steel industry is at risk. The reasons for this are complex and range from high electricity and energy costs to growing competition from Asia and the sharp rise in wage and salary costs. The transformation towards climate neutrality is also extremely costly – but at the same time absolutely essential. This is why in our fifth podcast episode, we explore the question of whether political conditions can help make European steel companies more competitive during their transformation. Are the political measures and regulations that have been introduced, such as CBAM, leading to the desired goals? Or is the EU putting its own steel industry out of business with them?

Guests:

Frank Peter (director of Agora Industrie, a think tank that focuses on issues related to the transformation of industry)

Dr. Matthias Gierse (Waelzholz consultant and former Director Sales and Purchasing ofthe Waelzholz Gruppe)

Episode 6 – The path to green steel: How Waelzholz is reducing its carbon emissions

Apple Podcasts Spotify

Content:

As a technology leader, Waelzholz is one of the pioneers in the industry on its transformation journey. This is the result of a systematic sustainability strategy that begins with traditional aspects such as energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources and extends to an innovative accounting model that can be used to offer cold rolled steel strip with reduced carbon emissions in a transparent and certified way. In this sixth podcast episode, you will learn which measures Waelzholz has implemented in this area and how they are linked to the company’s sustainability reporting.

Guests:

Dr. Heino Buddenberg (CEO of the Waelzholz Group)

Baroudi Zelit (CEO of the Brazilian Waelzholz subsidiary Waelzholz Brasmetal Laminação Ltda.)
